Before the night is over, I'm going to prove to you, one by one, that you're all monsters
CHARACTER NAME: Gabriel ‘Sylar’ Gray FANDOM: Heroes LOCATION: New York City AGE: Thirty-five
INFORMATION: (After canon drop point) It had been three years since disaster struck; no one really knew whose fault it was or who was to blame; Sylar knew there were all kinds of different people in the world; both those with abilities and those of a supernatural descent. He’d tried to be good; to put reins on his destructive and abusive nature. He needed to control himself because without control, people died. Lots of people. After helping Peter Petrelli save New York City from almost certain destruction at the hands of Samuel Sullivan, Sylar disappeared off the grid, staying at his now-deceased father’s cabin until late 2012, when the events, as he warned Peter, took a turn for the worst.
It was supposed to be a brave new world as he’d promised, but it was anything but that; after the world found out about people with abilities, well—it didn’t matter if they were saving lives with them or not. People didn’t care; they were different and that meant they were a threat. Sylar hadn’t been hunted with this much vigour since Danko had been around, and he wasn’t interested in being caught and being burned at the stake. Still though, the transient lifestyle was a lonely one, and even though they’d had a sordid past with one another, Sylar still missed some of the people he’d come to know.
HISTORY: Gabriel Gray wanted to be a special person. Someone important. Always wanting to please his overbearing mother, he knew his mundane life working in the watch shop wasn’t going to make him into the man his mother wanted. When he heard of Chandra Suresh and his research into those with potential abilities, Gabriel volunteered himself for those tests, but the professor failed to detect anything abnormal about Gabriel at all. When he discovered his ability on his own, intuitive aptitude, or the knowledge of how things worked, Gabriel used Chandra Suresh to gain information on others with abilities around the world and their locations. He’d almost given up; he was a failure to his mother and to Chandra; he’d almost killed himself because he just wasn’t good enough, but then things changed.
When Gabriel began killing those with abilities in order to gain their powers, he adopted the name Sylar, leaving behind the mild mannered and polite Gabriel Gray, the man with a conscience locked deep inside of his now dark mind. He lived for months as a nomad, traveling everywhere to gain these abilities, leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake. He wanted to become more powerful than anyone in the world; he wanted to be the most feared man and the greatest weapon ever known, but somehow, things didn’t work out in his favour.
After accidentally killing his mother, Sylar is attacked by a man named Hiro, driving a samurai sword into his stomach to kill him, but killing the bad guy—that was never easy. Sylar recovered, albeit without abilities for the most part, but he recovered nonetheless. Hi s goal, ultimately, is to find the cheerleader that is invincible. Indestructible. It took months upon months of hunting, but eventually he found Claire in California, and steals her ability. From Claire he learns about Primatech Research, a company that has information on most of those with abilities all around the world. Thinking he’d just break in and steal the information, as well as some abilities from those held captive in the Level 5 security hold, Sylar heads to Primatech, only to be overwhelmed and taken captive.
He spent months—he wasn’t sure how long, but months remaining drugged, too volatile and angry to trust without his veins full of sedatives. It was then that he was informed by Angela Petrelli that she is in fact his mother, and that Senator Nathan Petrelli is his older brother, Peter Petrelli his younger. The elation only lasted for so long though before Sylar found out Angela had lied to manipulate him and, enraged, he breaks loose and eventually, his rage turns to Nathan Petrelli, slitting his throat and killing him. The family that he could have been a part of was all a lie, and it hurt him more than anyone could understand.
All prepared to meet the President, steal his appearance and become the man he always promised his mother he’d be, he’s surprised when the last thing he sees is Peter Petrelli, and for weeks he spent feeling like he was trapped, maybe it was months, he didn’t know, but when he came to again, he wasn’t Sylar, not even Gabriel, but Nathan Petrelli, the man he’d killed. Through persuasive techniques, he found that Matt Parkman had forced all of Nathan’s memories into Sylar, causing him to take the form of Nathan but eventually he restores himself, leaving a broken hearted Peter to say goodbye to his brother one last time before Sylar took back over.
He realized during his time with a traveling carnival full of specials that he could be good, and that there could be redemption even for people like him, even though Samuel, the owner of the carnival, kept him around for anything but good purposes. Sylar did, however, have one redeeming good deed, saving New York City from Samuel’s attack, leading to his arrest. He didn’t even kill anyone, and he realized at that time that he finally had some kind of self control. He still didn’t trust himself, however, and with the new media coverage surrounding people and their abilities, Sylar disappeared.
